April kept me sane. She maintained exactly the right level of empathy, pragmatism and humour that I needed. At a time when you become completely internalised, completely oblivious to everything around you (who knew my husband had fed me two and a half packets of jaffa cakes during my labour? Not me!), hers was the voice that cut through. She judged my stubborn character extremely well.
Near the end, when I felt I couldn't go on, it was April's well-timed encouragement ("Most women give up at this point") that kept me going. Her judgment calls were spot on. I felt cared for, heard, respected and guided. But she didn't take any nonsense. And that's exactly what I needed.
Her knowledge and expertise were clear throughout. She made me feel comfortable and I completely trusted her advice. Her expert experience meant that my baby went straight into the hands of the paediatrics team the moment she was born, to have her airways checked and cleared, and that I didn't even have time to panic before Alannah was in my arms, safe and sound.
If I go through that again, I would want April by my side.

Where do I even start with my story?

After going into labour and being sent from hospital to hospital and home again, being demoralised, upset and scared, I was finally in full labour and was blessed to have April providing my midwifery care for the evening. April stood by my side and controlled my whole labour from start to finish, laughed with me when I laughed, held my hand whilst I cried and dealt with the many complications outstandingly and with ease. After about 15 hours of intense labour I was taken for emergency c-section. I’m not afraid to say I was absolutely petrified, my whole body was shaking but April held my hand the whole time and encouraged me that I could do it. Not only was she incredible to me but my partner too. Kept us both laughing at the hardest times and kept us going when I felt like giving up.
People say ‘couldn’t have done it without’ but when I say it, I really do mean that. If it wasn’t for April, I wouldn’t ever dream of having more children or allowing myself to go through the experience again. The scariest time of my life was turned into the most blessed, incredible and certainly memorable day of my life. April helped bring our baby boy into the world and we could never thank her enough for everything she done for us.
Incredible lady and midwife. We would never have anyone else for our midwifery care! When’s the next one?

Thank you for having been there for the birth of my daughter. You believing in me more than I did and coaching and encouraging me through it, gave me the experience of a lifetime, exactly as I wanted: natural, instinctive, and certainly unique!
We will never forget you on our journey of motherhood and life-appreciation.
Here is to you and the awesome team on the 8-9th February at your hospital!
With many, many thanks & love.
